Rugby World Cup win of ages gets a re-run 25 years later

Twenty-five years to the day since South Africa’s maiden – and memorable – Rugby World Cup triumph, SuperSport will relive the epoch-making event with Wednesday’s viewing including a re-broadcast of the final.

“It will be a day of boerie rolls with friends and family,” said captain Francois Pienaar, who plans to settle down to watch SuperSport when a world of memories will collide.

The famous match will be broadcast on SuperSport 1 at 6pm and will be preceded by interviews with several of the central figures, including the late Joost van der Westhuizen, James Small and Chester Williams.

Despite the low 15-12 score, the Ellis Park match was packed with incident and drama and bookended by Nelson Mandela’s remarkable parade in the number six jersey and his magnificent exchange with Pienaar during the trophy presentation.

“It is only when you reflect on this many years later . . . we actually said exactly the same words to one another,” Pienaar said last week.

“When Mister Mandela gave me the World Cup, he said to me, ‘Francois, thank you for what you’ve done for the country’ and I said to him, ‘No, Mister Mandela, thank you for what you’ve done for the country.’

“I’ve said this publicly; I wished I hugged him. I really wished I hugged him there, but I thought that was against protocol, you can’t do that. The smile on his face, the smile when he saw the team and greeted the team was something really special.”
