All roads lead to Las Vegas for Conor McGregor showdown

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier are locked at 1-1 in their seven-year rivalry.

This weekend’s battle in Las Vegas will settle the score when the pair headline UFC 264, a riveting fight card to be broadcast live on SuperSport Action from midnight on Saturday.

Former two-division champ McGregor won their first fight, a 2014 featherweight showdown, by first-round knockout. Poirier, the number one contender at lightweight, came out on top in their second meeting with a second-round knockout six months ago.

It was a defeat that seemed to humble the brash Irishman, although “The Notorious” has got in several digs in the lead-up to their third meeting.

Having vowed no more “Mister Nice Guy”, McGregor knows that another defeat could do more than derail his attempt to reclaim a UFC championship; it might well diminish his standing as one of MMA’s superstars.

Although Poirier will likely start as a slight favourite, McGregor’s one-punch power, allied to his blazing speed, make him a live underdog. He has the ability to spark anyone in the lightweight division, and that alone demands respect.

South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis features on the undercard, against Trevin Giles of the US.

The undercard will be broadcast from midnight to 4am (CAT), followed by the main card from 4am (CAT).

Conor McGregor – Notorious, an all-access documentary, will be broadcast on SuperSport Action on Friday (8.30pm).

The film provides an exclusive look at the MMA icon who was once on welfare and living in his parent’s spare room in Dublin before rising to become the biggest name in Mixed Martial Arts, garnering multiple championship belts and massive seven figure payouts. Filmed over four years and mixing thrilling fight footage with behind-the-scenes moments, this documentary chronicles McGregor’s incredible ascent to the pinnacle of MMA.
